Yesterday, I came home with a small, wrinkly bundle of sleeping joy almost dwarfed by the colossal carseat in which she lay snuggled. She swam in a brand new 0 to 3 month old onesie and matching yellow and white sweatsuit, but none of that mattered. She was going home, after spending the first week of life outside of the womb in newborn intensive care.
That was yesterday, or so it seemed.
Flash forward ten months. Those same sweatpants lay in a forgotten pile of outgrown onesies, pants, and other miscellaneous tiny garments. As for the carseat, well, that too has been outgrown, as was the changing table, miniature baby bag, and every other baby shower gift received.
The baby? Well, she is still a joy, but the small and wrinkly part is nonexistent, as well as the sleeping part. She fights sleep, throws temper tantrums, and enjoys banging toys, dragging keys across hardwood floors, and digging in trashcans.
It’s her way or no way, or so she thinks, and, as the firstborn and only child, she usually gets what she wants, if not from us, then from one of those relatives that had once said “I’m not going to be the one to spoil her!”
