Change You Can Believe In? Really?

Types of Wealth gained in this post

The dream is, if I may say, further away from being realized than when King said it in 1963. At least then, the Black community was an actual community, and did not become complacent, as this generation has.

Let me first state that I am a supporter of soon- to be president Barack Obama. I like his poise. I like his confidence. Most of all, I like that he is unafraid to speak his mind, though some may not agree with him. My issue is the Black community, who has, in the span of a few months, gone from completely not knowing who Obama is, to worshiping him as the “dream realized”, in reference to the also misunderstood Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The last time I checked, Blacks are still being judged by the color of our skin, not the content of our character, as King dreamed of in his famous speech. (Betcha never heard that part).

For some strange reason, people think that King’s dream was for there to be a Black president, so now that it has happened, the struggle is over. Obama will get into office, all minorities will receive a reparation check, and the white man will be forced into the ghetto while Blacks are given mansions and unlimited riches. So, as inauguration approaches, we as Blacks make sure that we took the day off from our jobs (sticking it to the man), bought our Obama tee shirts, keychains, calendars, (and other crap that makes us think we know about politics, though we still have not read Obama’s Blueprint for Change) and started counting down to the day our lives become easier (or so we believe).

How about this? Barack is not the “magic” negro (is that offensive to you?) He did not call out the Black community (How is he dissing ALL Black fathers when HE is a Black father?) He presents himself as a level headed man who sees the problem, sees the solution, and attempts to convince others to assist him in introducing the two. He may not be able to complete all of the things he has spoken about, not because he is deceitful, but rather, due to the inevitable fact that he cannot move forward without the permission of his constituents. And who really wants a more practical world?

So, yes, Obama will take office on January 20, 2009, and become the first Black president, and more blah blah that has nothing to do with the real issues at hand. The dream is, if I may say, further away from being realized than when King said it in 1963. At least then, the Black community was an actual community, and did not become complacent, as this generation has. This new breed of Negro hates the color of his skin more than the white man ever could. The middle aged condemn the younger generations, but offer no help. The younger generation, misguided, continues down a path of destruction. Worst of all, we have taken “…the tranquilizing drug of gradualism..”, as Dr. King specifically warned us not to. We have learned to measure our own success and worth according to what the ‘Corporate-Elite White’ community thinks. But that’s not his fault. It’s our own, for making it acceptable.

So no, we have not arrived. No, the dream is not realized. And no, racism is not gone just because there is a Black president.

“….The life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.” –Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sorry to say that in 2009, this is still true.
